Kalnciema Quarter offers independent audio guided tours in Latvian and English

In order to promote high-quality tourism and understanding of Riga's wooden architectural heritage, Kalnciema Quarter also offers independent guided tours to visitors. The audio guide for residents and guests of Riga (both groups and individually) is available at Kalnciema Quarter Wine Shop&Cafe from Monday to Saturday from 10 AM until 10 PM.

The audio guide will give the visitors of Kalnciema Quarter an opportunity to learn more about the wooden architecture in Riga and Kalnciema Quarter during half an hour, independently guiding the tour in Latvian or English.

The audio guide tells the history and heritage of the wooden architecture of Riga, and in particular Kalnciema Quarter, from the days of the wooden architecture of gold times to the present day. It also invites the listener to go to Kalnciema Quarter building to study the history of Kalnciema Quarter buildings, building methods, architectural elements, as well as living conditions, the process of renewal and the current use. The audio guide reveals a lot of interesting facts, such as the fact that in the past, for the purpose of military protection, the Riga suburban buildings were built from wood and burned eight times during history, while at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries there were 12 thousand wooden houses in Riga. Today, about four thousand of them have survived. The audio guide material was prepared by Inga Karlštrēma, an art scholar and historian of the Riga Architectural History.

In addition to the audio guide we invite you to use a series of fun challenges for the whole family - photo orientation, memory game, etc. tasks.

The six historic wooden buildings of Kalnciema Quarter are an architectural heritage and are included in the Latvian Cultural Canon. The buildings were built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in Western late classicism, their rebirth began in 2001, and today six renovated wooden buildings are publicly accessible to visitors. Today Kalnciema Quarter has become one of Riga's most vibrant cultural centers, bringing together thousands of visitors every year; art and crafts, cultural events, healthy food and architectural heritage meet here. Hiding from a simple walker, Kalnciema Quarter is a courtyard with a small apple orchard and restaurant, a Wine Shop &Cafe, an Art Gallery and Designer Salon, a Wood Architecture Center, a Saturday Farmer and Crafts Market, and concerts and food festivals during the warm months.
