Meteņi and Venice carneval at Kalnciema Quarter

Saturday, February 25th, from 10:00 to 16:00 Kalnciema Quarter calls on Meteņi  carnival - traditional celebration connected  with Venice carnival atmosphere. At 13:00 o'clock folklore ensamble "Skandinieki" enters the celebrations, while Italian Cultural Club L'Italia will share with Venice carnival traditions.  There will be displayed Jevgeņija Kiļupe authentic-made animal papier -mache masks.


February 25th Kalnciema Quarter prepares and waits for the visitors in bright outfits and masks. Meteņi is ancient Latvian spring waiting celebration in a cheerful mood. There are mask parades, fun songs, dances and jokes.  At Meteņi celebrations its used to eat and drink traditional dishes - pork and specially made barley. In Europe at this time people used masks to intermingle in the crowd and get a completely different identity. Carnival takes place before Lent, when there was no celebration and were not allowed to eat meat and eggs.


At 10:00 to 16:00 in Wine shop hall will be excibited colorful and various most popular Latvian forest animal and pet masks, which are made in professional authentic and classically beautiful papier-mache technique by Jevgeņija Kiļupe. 


Alternating between traditions, within the celebrations will be held "masking" play together with folk group of friends "Skandinieki", while the Italian Cultural Centre will invite adults and children to the workshop, where you can make yourself a magnificent Venetian mask. At the farmers and artisans market you can get the coveted festive feast or village bribe - pies, cakes, bacon, pigs ears, woven scarves and much more.


Folklore friends group "Skandinieki" fun songs and games will be held from 13:00 to 14:00, while the Venetian mask workshop for smallest from 11:00 to 14:00 (Wine store room). Meteņi market and Jevgenija Ķīlupe authentic masks - all day long.
